My In-Flight Essentials

One of the direct consequences of living abroad is that the start of the festive season means flying back home.

Right now I am wrapped up in a crazy spiral of packing Christmas presents, choosing festive outfits and a deciding which red lipsticks to take with me. And just as usual, I am way behind schedule! But there is one thing that is done and ready, and that is my hand-luggage. Because I am going nowhere without my in-flight essentials!

1. Soap & Glory • Mini Hand Food • £2.50 - Being the daughter of an airline pilot and a former air-hostess, and hence having always been a frequent flyer, one of the things I am sure of is that flying makes my hands extremely dry. I discovered Soap & Glory's hand moisturiser when I first moved into the UK, and it has since become my all-time favourite. I have even managed to convert my mum to it!

2. Soap & Glory • Hand Maid • £2.50 - I am not a huge fan of queing for airplane toilets, so carrying this mini anti-bacterial wash comes in very handy! Plus it smells as amazingly as hand food.

3. House of Marley • Harambe Native Headphones • £14 - Because you never know how loud your fellow passengers will be, I always take a pair of over-ear headphones. After the sudden death of my beloved Senheisers, I decided to replace them with these cuties. The sound quality is amazing and they look stunning!

4. Kindle Paperwhite • £99 - The absolute love of my life. It has built-in light, an all-mighty battery and a super easy-to-use user interface. Plus it syncs across all of the devices where I have the Kindle app installed! I am currently reading The Fire by Katherine Neville, which is the sequel to one of my favourite novels ever, The Eight.

5. Hot Pink Leather- Look Kindle Case • £12 - I take my Kindle pretty much everywhere, so having a protective case for it is an absolute necessity. My case has magnetic flap closure and auto sleep/wake function, which trust me, comes in very handy!

6. Watermelon Lip Fix • Superdry • £6 - I have a confession to make: I am a lip-balm addict. I have one in every coat, every purse and every room of the house. Even one of my work colleages found one in the pocket of the company labcoats! I simply can't stand chapped lips! Superdry's lipfix is my latest discovery and has quickly escalated into my lipbalm ranking! Plus it smells a-m-a-z-i-n-g-l-y!

7. Sheen Supreme Lipstick • M·A·C • £16.50 - I usually go with bare lips, minimal make-up and a touch of lipbalm, because when it comes to flying, comfort comes first! But when I arrive at my destination, I usually visit the toilets and suddenly realise I look like Wednesday Addams A bit of nude lipstick and some cheek make-up action (see next item!) and I am all set!

8. Blush and Bronzer Duo • E·L·F • £3.95 - This little gem is a must-have for your beauty bag. It is fairly inexpensive and has very acceptable pigmentation. I use the shade "St Lucia" which contains really close dupes of NARS Deep Throat and Laguna!

9. Retractable Kabuki • Too Faced • £30 - I have owned mine for 7 years and it's still in pristine condition. It is perfect to apply bronzer and blusher on the go, and it feels ridiculously soft on your skin!

What are your in-flight essentials?

My Holiday Red Lip Colour Selection

If you follow this blog, you probably have realised that I don't usually wear bold lip colours.
I find that nude, lightweight and super moisturising formulas are what usually work best for me.

However now, with the Holiday Season almost on our doorstep, I feel the need to go a bit sassier lipstick-wise!

Over the last couple of weeks, I have tried to come up with a wide selection of holiday red lipsticks, with different finishes and different pigmentation. Enjoy!

LEFT TO RIGHT: LOOK Beauty Fat Lips! in Smacker  | MAC Lip Pencil in Redd  | REVLON Colorburst Lacquer Balm in Provocateur | REVLON Lip Butter in Candy Apple | REVLON Lip Butter in Macaron | BENEFIT Benebalm & Benetint | NARS Dragongirl | MAC Russian Red

LOOK Beauty Fat Lips! in Smacker £6 - A 2-in-1 lipstain & lipstick that is not too muted, not too in-your-face. It reminds me a lot of Clinique's Chubby Sticks, with a more attractive price tag! Pros: Price & durability. Cons: I think this product might have been discontinued, as I can't find it anywhere anymore!

MAC Lip Liner in Redd £12.50 - The perfect shade of tomato red.  Pros: MAC=Outstanding quality, plus it lasts ages. Cons: I am not a huge fan of using lip pencils to colour my lips, I find it too drying!

REVLON Colorburst Lacquer Balm in Provocateur £7.99 - I love, love, love this one! It leans a bit towards the fuchsia side, with lots of shine and super minty and balmy sensation Pros: Everything? Plus Boots usually has offers on Revlon products. I got this one for free when buying two lip butters. Cons: None for me!

REVLON Lip Butter in Candy Apple £7.99 - I am a huge fan of REVLON lip butters. They are lightweight, seriously moisturising and come an awesome range of colours.  Pros: If you are more a lipgloss/lipbalm person, but want a sassy hint of red, this is your Holiday lipstick! Cons: If you are into matte, bold lipsticks, this won't do the trick for you.

REVLON Lip Butter in Macaroon £7.99 - You might think "Hey, this is not a red lipstick". And you are absolutely right. However, I believe that this vintage rose shade, with slight hints of red, will make an amazing holiday lipstick. Pros: It is wearable and sophisticated. And it will leave your lips really, really smooth! Cons: Once again, if you are after a bold shade, this might not be it.

BENEFIT Benebalm + Benetint £14.50 + £24.50 - I have decided to pair the iconic Benetint, with their relatively recent Benebalm. Pros: Benebalm feels like heaven on your lips. SERIOUSLY. And though the price tag for the two of them is ummm... Let's say not very budget friendly, you can save a huge amount of money if you buy them together in a holiday gift set! Cons: On its own, Benebalm hardly shows. And when pairing it with Benetint, I always struggle to get an even application. Some areas of my lips seem to go darker.

MAC Russian Red £15.50 - This lovely deep and velvety shade of red has been around since the 80s and has become MAC's most iconic ever lipstick Pros: It looks stunning in pictures, so all of you Instagram Bunnies out there... You need this lipstick, if you don't have it already.  Cons: I personally find that this lipstick dries out my lips a serious lot. And applying lipablm and/or lipgloss pretty much ruins the velvety finish. So for me, Russian Red is a photo-only lipstick.

NARS Matte Lip Pencil in Dragon Girl £18 - Another iconic shade that deserved a mention in this post. It is a very, very intense shade of cherry red.  Pros: It looks stunning and it doesn't feel as drying as MAC's Russian Red.  Cons: I prefer the twist mechanism of REVLON Lacquer Balm. Not a fan of having to use a sharpener!

My Christmas Wishlist

Historically, my Christmas wishlists have always been a good few pages long. But I have come to a point in life where my only wish is to spend the Christmas Holidays with my loved ones.

As a result of living in excess of 1000 km away from my Homeland, I have learned to cherish every single moment I spend with my moderately big and noisy and deeply loving family.

However, I have had a few people asking if I could give them some guidance regarding Christmas presents, so over the last few weeks, whilst I was trying to recover from the worst flu ever (seriously, it has lasted a whole month!) I have come with a selection of my favourite items for this Christmas.

Enjoy! ;-)

MY FAVOURITES:

Oily Skin Detox

Oh, the joys of having an oily skin. Of ligthing up like an incandescent bulb halfway through the day and having to rush into the toilet to use blotting paper. Of checking the labels of all your beauty products hoping they will state those two critical words: Oil Free.

For almost a decade, I relied on cleansing products targeted for acne-prone skin. But now, in my late twenties, they have started to feel too agressive, leaving certain areas of my face feeling dry and miserable.

During the last couple of months, I have committed to a new detox routine, aiming to keep redness and shine at bay, without over-drying.

- TEA TREE + Clear Skin Facial Soap by Tisserand. | The perfect soap bar. It removes all traces of makeup and leaves my skin feeling fresh and clean. It is very inexpensive and literally lasts ages!

- Ionic Clay Mask Shine Away by Boots Botanics. | A five star face mask. It contains oceanic clay and willowbark, which target imperfections and excess oil without overdrying. Its texture is very liquid so I have found it works best on clean and dry skin. I apply it once a week and I can definitely notice that the next day, my skin stays shine free for a longer time!

- Dramatically different moisturising gel by Clinique | My day moisturiser. It is oil-free and non-comedogenic. Compared to Clinique's classic DDML, this gel feels more liquid and less balmy, but provides the perfect level of hydration for my oily skin.

- Normaderm Night Detox by Vichy | It claims to be designed for blemish prone adult skin, targeting the excess oil production that occurs overnight. I find that it refines my pores and gives me a radiant look the next morning.

- Tea Tree Blended Oil by Superdrug | My absolute holygrail of skincare products. I have been using this for two years now and nothing compares to it. Having previously used The Body Shop's tea tree oil, I found Superdrug's to feel considerably oilier on my skin and to take longer to absorb. But there is nothing wrong with that! I dab a few drops on my skin before bedtime rand it does wonders to my skin, seriously.

And finally, because detox can be too aggressive for the not-so-oily areas of my face, I make sure that these are nourished and protected!

- Super Balm by Boots Botanics | This reminds me a lot of Korres Shea Butter Lip Balm with a very different packaging and a slightly runnier consistency. I use it to protect my lips and the area around them before applying my skincare products.

- Cucumber Eye Gel by Boots Essentials | I keep it refrigerated and apply it on the eye area at night and in the morning. It makes my eyes feel lightly hydrated and super refreshed. It also does wonders after a night out!

Do you suffer from an oily skin as well? What are skincare products do you use to tame it?
